The 2006 Veteran's Day Celebration will be on Friday, November 10th The Ellijay Lions Club proudly sponsors the annual Veteran's Day Celebration, along with many community supporters that provide food or other services for our Veterans. The festivities begin with a breakfast served at the First United Methodist Church of Ellijay to all Veterans. The food is provided by many local restaurants and includes all types of biscuits, juice and coffee. The Veteran's Day Parade is always a huge hit! Along with our many Veterans, we have the Gilmer Middle School and Gilmer High School Marching Bands; the Boy Scouts; the ROTC and the parade route is filled with many of our local students. We depart from the First United Methodist Church and march up Main Street to the roundabout, better known as the old town square for the Celebration Ceremony. The Veteran's Day Celebration Ceremony is tribute to all our Veterans and their families. The old town square is ablaze in a sea of red, white and blue to honor those with us in body and those with us in spirit. The ceremony has many elements of patriotism: from the laying of the wreath, to the playing of the bagpipes, to the choral tributes and speeches... it is a site to behold. Following the ceremony, all Veterans and their families are invited to attend the BBQ luncheon held in their honor at the Ellijay Lions Club. Upon arriving, Veterans are welcomed by hundreds of cards, posters and handmade placemats made by our local students. A special tribute is made by the "Sweet Thank You Club" - table after table of desserts, each one made to thank the Veterans for all they have done for us.
You do not need to be a Gilmer County resident nor do you need to make reservations to participate but we do ask that you sign our Veteran's Registry at the breakfast or luncheon. If you would like more information, please contact the Veteran's Day Celebration Chairperson, Lion Lou Harley at (706) 635-7050. |
