Our story

Friendship in action

Ellijay Lions Club started Special Friends in 1989 after recognizing a need for a recreational program for young adults with intellectual and physical disabilities in Gilmer County. It began with three friends — one girl and two boys.

Today, the program welcomes 36 members. Activities are planned so everyone can participate and enjoy time together, with families and Lions volunteers at the heart of every gathering.

What we do

Every month brings something to look forward to

From local outings to celebrations at the Lions Den, Special Friends creates shared experiences that make community feel closer.

Outings & adventures

Horseback riding, bowling, movies, the Atlanta Zoo, Stone Mountain, the Chattanooga Aquarium, and more.

Community traditions

The July 4th Parade, Gilmer County Fair, Shrine Circus, and other favorite local events.

Lions Den gatherings

Food, live music, cloggers, puppets, birthdays, and in-house games such as hockey and bowling.

Holiday celebrations

A Christmas party for Special Friends and their families, complete with gifts and a visit from Santa.

Inclusive by design

Designed for every friend

Special Friends plans activities with accessibility and enjoyment in mind. Members include people who use wheelchairs to people who are blind, and every gathering is built around participation, connection, and fun.

Anyone interested in joining the Special Friends group can contact the Ellijay Lions Club or speak with any club member.
